Outside locking hinges are used for amputations at the elbow or distal humerus when use of the prosthetic elbow would excessively elongate the humeral section of the prosthesis.
Hosmer Outside Locking Hinge has seven locking positions. Reciprocating type locking mechanism requires very short cable travel to operate. Lower anchor strap is laminated around end of humeral socket to insure permanent alignment of hinges. Available without lower anchor strap. Each pair includes one locking and one non-locking hinge, with medial side locking.

The 12K41 ErgoArm from Ottobock is a lightweight and versatile mechanical elbow that is compatible with a passive or body-powered hand or terminal device. The internal Infinite Position lock is cable-operated and can be locked, or unlocked, under load in any position. It can bear a load of up to 230N Newtons (51.71 lbs) at a forearm length of 305mm (12 in.). The Slip-Stop function makes it possible to lower the forearm in a controlled manner without having to fully release and reactivate the lock.
